This probably a one of a kind Sierra Blue 1968 Rainbow of Colors promotional GT Mustang hardtop. It has a black vinyl roof, aftermarket wheels, black side C stripe, vented hood, fog lamps, metal rocker panel trim, and a 390ci V8 engine. Scott Johnson's family bought this car in the mid 1970's from a local dealer, probably only one other owner. During the 70s the car was repainted to a match of its original factory color. Scott says that everyone thought that this could not have been a factory color since nothing like it is on the 1968 Mustang color charts until he recently ordered a Marti Report which showed the car as one of the Rainbow of Color promotional GT hardtops and it was painted Sierra Blue. The 1968-69 Rainbow of Colors promotion offered 13 special colors, one of them was Sierra Blue. This amazing car was our Attitude Of The Week for November 23, 2008. This rare 1968 Madagascar Orange Mustang hardtop from the west coast Rainbow of Colors promotion is owned by Dale Olson of Rohnert Park, California. It was our
Attitude Of The Week for December 28th, 2008. Dale writes,
I got this car in 1990 and finished restoring it in 1996.
It was not show room quality, but it was a very nice car. For the entire time I've had it, I was misreading the data plate and didn't know exactly what the car was. Even few years ago I did search on internet of Orange 68 Mustang, and got nothing. Just within the past few weeks I finally
found out the car was a part of the Rainbow Mustang promotion of 68
and 69. I don't have the original engine in it because when I got the
car someone had put a straight six in it. I also had a 67 mustang with
a 289 4v that was usable so I rebuilt it. Also no longer have the C4
automatic for it. I put in the Ford design 4 speed (RUG-E2), but no
modifications other than bolt-ons. The car only has 23,000
miles on it since restoring it, but due to it sitting outside in the
weather, it needs to be completely restored again (except the
engine, transmission, and rear end). We've included some scanned in photos after its first restoration in 1996, hopefully Dale can get us more in the future. Also take a look at our

I bought this original 'Rainbow of Colors' car on-line about two years ago. The gentleman who restored this car initially intended to part it out. He opted to restore its original Calypso Coral special order paint (known as

Rainbow of Colors West Coast promotional Mustang and was our
Attitude of the Week for April 26th, 2009. It was built in San Jose, ordered in Los Angeles, under a special order with special paint WT3822. Mal writes:
My Mustang was imported in to Australia from Los Angeles as a running car and I purchased it from an importer. I knew little about Mustangs and the hobby grew from there. The body and Paint have been refurbished and the color has been professionally matched to the original color in the trunk. Body was rust free fortunately. The Mustang was in very good original condition when purchased and I drove it home, I have done most of the mechanicals and put it all together my self, I also have the original owners manual and is a matching numbers car. But most of all, I love driving it. Spanish Gold shares the same paint code as Black Hills Gold used in January 1968 for the Color of the Month Mustang promotion. The Color of the Month promotion offered a special ordered color and sport options for each of the first 4 months of 1968. Black Hills Gold was offered in January for the New Years; Passionate Pink in February for Valentines day; Emerald Green in March for Saint Patrick's Day, and Eastertime Coral for April. Jeffrey Wheeler's recently restored Olive Green 1968 Rainbow of Colors Mustang hardtop is our
Attitude Of The Week for the week of July 10, 2011. Jeff found this amazing car with 28K original miles on it in its original special order Olive Green paint and options as part of the West Coast
Rainbow of Colors promotion which featured custom colors and upgrades. Jeff writes,
I wanted to give you an update and send some new pictures of Maggie Mae. She is on the road and doing great! I entered her in the 2011 PNWMC Mustang II's R a Mustang Too Spring Show n Shine and had a blast sharing her story with others and listening to the comments like 'I didn't know they came in that color' or 'Look at that, it has a bench seat'. Over all I would have to say she was very appreciated by others as she was awarded 2nd place in the '67 - '68 Coupe Class. It was a proud day. Now I am enjoying showing her off and eager for September to arrive and with it the 4 day International Mustang Show in Spokane.

Originally posted July 25, 2010. This is one of two known Olive Green 1968 Rainbow of Colors promotional Mustangs; and besides the unique special order color, it is nearly all original. It is owned by Jeff from Oregon and was our Attitude Of The Week for the week starting July 25, 2010. Jeff bought this car thinking it had 133,000 miles, but during restoration, discovered it only had 33,000. The Rainbow of Colors was a 1968 and 1969 sales promotion in the San Jose - Los Angles area which offered new Mustang owners one of thirteen special order paints and sport upgrade options. This Olive Green is one of those 13 colors. During the restoration process Jeff has tried to keep as much of the original paint as possible. He still has the white side stripes to put back on.

Rainbow of Colors promotional Mustang which is also a Branded Special. This olive green is one of 13 special colors which a new Mustang owner could order along with several upgrades in the west coast Rainbow of Colors promotion. Also during this time dealers could add a Branded Special emblem to further promote a car. Amazingly this car is both! This was the first Olive Green Rainbow of Colors promotional Mustang that found us. A few months ago, Wolfgang Kohrn of
ponysite.de, contacted us about finding a unique originally painted, olive green, 1968, Mustang in the Netherlands which had all the options and special order data to indicate that it was the first car found of this unique color. This is that car which is also featured on
Wolfgang's site. So far we've only found 9 names of the 13 colors of the promotion. This green was not one of them, so we've been temporarily calling it Olive Green. If you know the official color name,
let us know. About the same time, Jeff from Oregon, emailed us on his newest purchase of an
olive green 1968 Mustang which turns out to be a sister car to Robbie's because the share the same DSO order area, special order number, and therefore ordered by the same dealer which was, Lou Gerard Motors, in Redding, California. Attitude Of The Week for the week starting January 30, 2011. The Rainbow Of Colors promotion ran on the west coast on 1968 and 1969 Mustangs. They featured special paint offerings in all colors of the rainbow. This one was sold new at Highland Park Motors Inc. in Los Angeles, California. Don tells us,
"I bought it back in 2004, and was told by the previous owner it was 'Grabber Orange'. I knew at the time this wasn't correct as Grabber Orange was a '69 color, and bit lighter than the shade of my Mustang. I had wondered since about the correct color, until last year when I stumbled onto your website, which encouraged me to run the Marty Report..." Besides the special order paint, the Marty Report listed the following options: 289-2V Engine, Parchment Power Top w/ Glass Backlite, C-4 Cruise-O-Matic Transmission,
F70X14 Wide Oval Tires, White Sidewall Nylon Tires, Air Conditioner - Selectaire, AM/8-Track Stereo Radio, and Tinted Glass

This is a special order yellow, 1968, Mustang GT is one of the Rainbow of Colors promotional Mustangs from California. It is owned by Reiny van Uden from Volkel, The Netherlands, and is our
Attitude Of The Week for the week of July 15th, 2012. The yellow of the
Rainbow of Colors promotion went by many names in advertisements including Dandelion Yellow, Yummy Yellow and Razzle-Dazzel Yellow. Many of the promotional cars were Sprint optioned hardtops. This is more rare since it is a GT fastback. See the previous photos in this set to see how it looked before Reiny changed out the wheels and had the C-stripe put back on.

Attitude Of The Week for the week starting November 30, 2014. This beauty was ordered under DSO 71-0782 and delivered to Ralph Williams Ford in Encino, California. There were 133 Mustangs ordered on the same DSO special order number. We know that some also went to Mel Burns Ford of Long Beach CA and McCoy & Mills Ford of Fullerton CA. This car was ordered new with; black paint stripe, black vinyl roof, C4 Cruise-O-Matic transmission, 6.95x14.4 ply rated tires, white sidewall tires, Selectaire air conditioner, AM radio, tinted glass, and wheel covers.

Attitude Of The Week for the week starting September 6, 2015. David tells us that it has a bench seat, C4 automatic transmission, power steering, air conditioning, and a 302ci V8 (replacing the original 289). This Rainbow Of Colors car has the 71 Los Angeles order district and 0779 special order number. We've heard of another Whipped Cream 1968 hardtop from this special order as well.

Attitude Of The Week starting October 11, 2015. The car was purchased new by his Father at a dealership in Santa Ana, California. It has the DSO/Special Order number of 71-0783. Marc tells us,
"My Dad loved cars and took care of them. It had about 138,000 miles on it when he decided to do a minor restore. At one point, my Father had re-painted it, beefed up the engine (lighter manifold, racing cam, bigger carburetor, etc.), and re-did the interior. It was supposed to be parchment, but he
instead chose a white interior with blue carpet. I loved the car since I was about five so my Dad had always promised me the car when I was old enough. I remember every time it broke down, he would vent by saying he was just going to sell it. I used to get so upset, but he would always keep it. Unfortunately, the car was stolen from a parking lot in the early eighties. I was probably the most heartbroken of the entire family. Fortunately, the joyriders only wanted the battery and tires so they left it sitting on blocks. The car was recovered later that night. Needless to say, I was filled with joy in hearing the news and my Father was able to keep his
promise by giving it to me when I was sixteen. The car was not in great
shape at all. I spent most of my spare time working on it and most of my money on parts. In 1999, I was able to restore it back to almost original. It should have comfort weave parchment seats, but I was unable to find the material at the time. I removed the California smog equipment, added electronic timing and left the aftermarket aluminum manifold. I also installed a 3" Magnaflow Cat-Back (since I work for Magnaflow). I do still have all of the original parts. I had always tried to determine the paint color. The person who painted it had told me some story of having to get
the paint codes from Detroit, but never offered any detail as to the color.
Since it was a custom order, I was never able to determine exactly what the color is. Thanks to your website, I was able to decode the color as Sierra Blue. So the car has been in the family with one registered owner for the last 47 years and I will give it to my son in the next five years or so (let's hope he decides to keep it too)."

Chris sends us this photo of his 1968 Rainbow of Colors Mustang hardtop in special order Dandelion Yellow exterior paint. This amazing car is our Attitude of the Week starting November 23, 2018. Chris says, "This Rainbow of Colors Dandelion Yellow promotion car has been in the family since brand new. My uncle owned the dealership where it was ordered for his sister in law. It has many desirable options including the original J Code 302, full Sprint B package, console, tinted glass, cruise-o-matic and others shown in the Marti report. The exterior was restored to original, and the motor has had many upgrades including Edelbrock intake and carb, Mallory distributor, MSD 6 ignition box and coil, comp cams magnum cam and roller tip rockers, hooker comp headers, flowmasters, and 2.5" pipes with dual tips."

Check this one out! It's a Beatnik Blue 1968 Rainbow of Colors Mustang hardtop. This is our
Attitude Of The Week for the week starting June 22, 2020. Jason reached out to us to confirm. He asked,
"I think I have a rainbow of colours car. The car is in excellent condition and still retains its original body metal. It has spent years inside and never left exposed to the elements. From what I can see the car appears as if it was repainted once but I can not find anything anywhere that shows it to be painted any other colour. I sent a small paint chip in when requested by Kevin Marti so they could determine the paint code. They said it was beatnic blue..." Jason showed us a copy of the Marti Report with the WT8095 paint code match and the DSO of 710784. According to our research, this DSO matches a Beatnik Blue sibling that was delivered to Bill Ellis Ford in Rialto, California. Jason's was delivered to California Motors in Glendale, California. The dealerships are 55 miles apart.

Rainbow of Colors promotion offered Mustangs in a rainbow of special ordered paint colors and options for the West Coast. We have been calling this color
Beatnik Blue after an advertisement we found on the promotion at a local dealership. Mike has been restoring it. He had it shipped from California with much of its original paint, Ford special order WT8095. We have other examples of this paint on our site, but this one matches the original. The original was non-metallic. WT8... were blue colors; if the second digit was less than 8, it was non-metallic, etc. This beautiful car is our

Here is Mike's 1968 Rainbow of Colors promotional Mustang in its original special order blue paint and a bit of primer. The door data tag reads: Body 63A Mustang 2-door fastback body style, Color blank special order paint (verified to be WT8095 in this case), Date 16B build scheduled for February 16 1968, DSO 710784 Los Angeles ordering district with special order number 0784, Axle 2 2.79 conventional rear axle, and Trans W C-4 select shift automatic transmission. 71 0784 has been linked to at least 2 other similarly painted, special order Mustangs. Oh my, check out this 1968 Salt Lake City
Rainbow of Colors Mustang hardtop in special order purple! The photo looks like a painting. Jayme owns this car and is getting ready for restoration. It has the optional J-code, 230hp, 302ci 4V V8 under the hood, GT side stripe, full wheel covers, parchment interior trim, C4 automatic transmission, and of course special purple paint. We have been looking for the purple paint that has been listed in ads for the Rainbow of Colors promotion, and this one shows it off. We think it is Ford special paint code WT9083 (see the door data tag photo for a non-faded view of this paint). This amazing car and great photo is our Attitude of the Week starting July 9th, 2022.

Peter Manson's restored Poppy Green, 1969, Russ Davis Special / Rainbow of Colors, Super Cobra Jet, Mach 1 fastback was our Attitude of the Week for March 8th, 2008. This amazing Mach 1 was one of 10 ordered by Russ Davis Ford of Covina California to promote his dealership and most likely his racing cars. We actually have its sister on our site. Peter has done
extensive research as well as restoration on his car. The
Rainbow of Colors was a west coast primarily 1968 sales promotion which offered new Mustang owners many sporty upgrades as well as one of 13 or 14 special order bright colors. Many of these cars were base models. New information on Russ Davis shows that this special order may have been for a racing promotion since the several race car drivers were salesmen including Gas Ronda with his famous brightly colored Cobra Jet racer.
